The Webster Dictionary defines the word legend as “a person that inspires”. Being Bostonians, we tend to relate the word “legend” to sports. Bobby Orr, Larry Bird, or David Ortiz come to mind, but the list goes on – how blessed are we!

With this definition in mind, a legend is a person who sets themselves apart. Through their passion, zeal, and their unwavering commitment to what they do and are, they rise above to be remembered and emulated. At Saunders Hotel Group (SHG) we work with legends, and legends in the making, every day. Day in and day out, shoulder to shoulder, we inspire each other to be the very thing legends are made of – striving to be nothing short of the best in class.

Last week for the first time ever, we celebrated those legends that have been with SHG for over 20 years (one for 66 years!) what a celebration it was. Our 27 Legends come to us from 9 different countries, span 11 different hotel departments across all of SHG’s properties, and have a combined experience in hospitality of over 800 years! Hospitality is a profession that has a notoriously high turnover rate, so when over 15% of the workforce has a 20+ year tenure, well, we consider that a remarkable achievement.

But this achievement is not by chance. Roger A. Saunders founded the Saunders Hotel Group 66 years ago, and rose to become one of the most respected hoteliers in the country. While his accomplishments are too many to list, I believe that empowering and creating our Legends is what he is most proud of. The foundation of SHG is that our guests’ experience will never exceed our employees’ experience, and Mr. Saunders has truly lead by example by making each of his team members an extension of his family.
